Growing in the Full Knowledge of God
(Overcomer Wu)
“That you might walk worthily of the Lord unto all pleasing... growing in the full knowledge of God.” Colossians 1:10
The burden of our God as revealed through the prayer of the apostle Paul above unveils to us that God is not satisfied with a superficial relationship with His children; He desires full intimacy, unbroken closeness and fellowship between us and Him. For this reason, the apostle Paul, while seeking on behalf of the saints to know God's will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding (Col 1:9), prayed for the saints in Colosse to grow in the full knowledge of God. He knows all about us: our likes and dislikes, what is important to us, our plans and priorities. And He desires that we know Him in like manner-- in a deeper way. This was what the apostle Paul strove to achieve in giving up all things else in order that He may know Him (Phi 3:10). Since it is God's delight to reveal Himself to us, we don't have to look far to discover and to know Him in His fulness.
Isaiah 6:1 describes how God revealed Himself to the prophet: “I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, lofty and exalted, with the train of His robe filling the temple.” Isaiah's vision was filled with the image of the Lord. His ears resounded with the voices of the seraphim crying, “Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord of hosts,” and his mind was awestruck with the knowledge that He was in the presence of the King of glory. Isaiah's entire being was focused on God; his senses basked in the God's revelation of Himself. The reality of who the Almighty God, the Lord of hosts, is struck him anew with awe, humility, and a spirit of worship. Out of this experience, his relationship with God deepened and God was able to reveal His plans and purposes for the future of the various nations to Isaiah. Therefore, God was able to use Isaiah to pen 66 chapters of His thoughts and prophesies that were hidden from the rest of humanity at that time.
As with humans, so it is with God: Intimacy grows through an intentional investment of our time and emotion. This happens in our relationship with the Lord especially when we immerse ourselves in His Word, spending time focused solely on Him and absorbing His message of love. Thus, the Lord Jesus said to His disciples that if they love Him, they will keep His Word (Jn 14:15). We attune our senses to Him and His speaking when we are filled with His Word, for His written Word dwelling in our hearts becomes the living Word in our daily lives as the Lord's Spirit use them to speak an instant Word to us. Thus, we can experience Christ in every aspect of our daily life. If we would take the initiative to get into His Word, the Lord will then take the initiative to reveal Himself through them to us, for the Word of God is what testifies of Him (Jn 5:39b). Then, as we respond to each new revelation, your intimacy with your heavenly Father will strengthen.
